Roy Oliver Buckmaster, Jr., 86, passed away August 28, 2023, at St. Anthony’s Midtown after a severe stroke. Jim, as his family called him, was born September 22, 1936, in Shawnee, Oklahoma, to Roy Oliver Buckmaster and Birdie Mae Gregory. Jim was one of 13 children.
Jim grew up in Shawnee and attended Shawnee schools. He was married to Lorene Collier until her death in 2001 and together they had four children: Darlene, Scotty, Sheila, and Dewayne Buckmaster. Jim and Kay met and, in 2003, blended their families in a lifelong partnership that included Kay’s children Don, Wytonna, Jason and Jamie.
In his youth, Jim worked with his father; they would get cars from auction to fix and resale. Jim was mechanically inclined and tinkered in his shed until the tornado on April 19, 2023, took it out.
Jim was also talented behind the grill. He established a long-time career as a chef at his brother’s restaurant, Jay’s Steakhouse. Jim loved cooking and grilled the best steaks, HANDS DOWN! After retirement, Jim enjoyed manicuring his lawn and trying his luck at the casino. If he wasn’t in his shop tinkering or mowing the yard, or in front of a slot machine, you would find Jim in his favorite recliner watching sports - football and golf were his favorites!
Jim was preceded in death by both parents, Roy Sr. and Birdie Buckmaster; sisters, Florene, Cordelia, Areta, Edith, Peggy, Joann, Carmelita and Kay; brothers, Richard, Hudson, and Leroy; spouse, Lorene; daughters, Sheila and Darlene; son, Scotty and niece, Paula Buckmaster.
Jim is survived by his companion, Lorita Kay Gilbert, of the home; son, Dewayne Buckmaster, of Shawnee; brother, Paul Buckmaster & wife, Merle, of Shawnee; bonus children, Wytonna Crider, of Shawnee; Don and Christine Troxel, of Shawnee, Jason and Amy Gilbert, of Dale, and Jamie Gilbert, of Shawnee; and nephew, Joe Buckmaster, of Shawnee. Jim will be missed by his many relatives, including grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Services will be held on Thursday, September 7, 2023, at 10:00am, at AE Funeral Services in Shawnee, under the direction of Todd Tramel. Inurnment will be next to his daughter Sheila at Fairview Cemetery in Shawnee, OK, with Jamie Beller officiating.
